Inspired by his wildlife photos, author and nature writer Mike Unwin has been making the most of his lockdown time by creating some wonderful little alphabet poems.
A is for… Andean cock-of-the-rock
A is for Andean cock-of-the-rock
Whose colourful feathers would make a fine frock
An outfit to help you stand out in a crowd
(Were frocks made from birds not by law disallowed)
B is for… Blue whale
B is for Blue whale, biggest of all
Much bigger than even your average town hall
Far longer than sixty baguettes end to end
More impressive by far than this poem I’ve penned
C is for… Chimp
C is for Chimp – this considerate ape
Is concerned that humanity’s not in great shape
With Covid-19 causing fear and frustration
He’d help, if he wasn’t in self-isolation
D is for… Dik-dik
D is for dainty, diminutive Dik-dik
Tiniest guest at the antelope picnic
The troublesome name isn’t one that it chose
It would rather be known for its curious nose
E is for… Eland
E is for Eland, an antelope giant
Whose weight would demolish a Robin Reliant
Imposing in stature; of temperament mild
It shrinks at rebukes from a four-year-old child
